Established as an autonomous body under the Societies Registration Act, 1958, National Productivity Council (NPC) has a tripartite character which is reflected in the 75-Member Council and 25-Member Governing Body where Government, Industry and Labour are equally represented.
The NPC has its Headquarters at New Delhi and twelve Regional Directorates, two Regional Offices and two Training Institutes. It provides training, consultancy, research and information in the areas of productivity, industrial engineering, pollution prevention and control, human resource development and various other related fields. A Maintenance-cum-Training Centre has been built at Gandhi Nagar with the assistance of the Government of Gujarat.
India is a founder member of the Asian Productivity Organisation, Tokyo and NPC is nominated by Government to coordinate its programmes in India. These include workshops, surveys, seminars and trainings.
The basic activities of the Council are chiefly guided by its basis mission objectives :
To increase productivity in all spheres of industries and to pave the way for launching productivity drive in all spheres of economic activities of the country;
To stimulate and promote productivity consciousness by disseminating information regarding productivity techniques and processes;
To stimulate and facilitate establishment of regional/local and industry-wise productivity organisations; and
To undertake scientific research activities related to productivity.
As the premier institution for promotion of productivity in India, the activities and programmes of National Productivity Council were re-designed to achieve certain objectives. These are in line with the new economic scenario and changed needs for professional services in the areas aimed at achieving greater competitiveness improvement in working conditions and the quality of work life.
The Council has initiated activities in areas such as information technology, Pollution Prevention and Control, Interfirm Comparison, Agricultural Productivity, Bench Making, Energy Conservation & Energy Audit, Industrial Engineering, Plant Engineering, Trade Union and Worker Producitivity, etc. Pollution Prevention and Control & Inter-firm Comparison Projects were implemented under the Indo-German Co-operation Programme. A major Plan project under implementation is the establishment of a Bench marking Clearing House of India which will have international linkages.
Keeping in view the urgent need for productivity improvement in tune with the country’s efforts towards globalisation and the need to enhance competitiveness, the National Productivity Council observes its Foundation Day, February 12, as Productiivity Day followed by a Productivity Week throughout the country organising workshops, seminars, etc.
Productivity Awards
NPC has also instituted Annual National Productivity Awards to winners in the Agriculture, Manufacturing and Service Sectors and Food Processing Industries which excelled in Productivity Performance. Awards for the year 1996-97 were distributed by the Hon’ble Union Industry Minister, Shri Sikander Bakht.
