The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad was set up by the Government of India in 1961 for Education, Research, Service and Training in industrial Design, Textile & Apparel Design and Communication Design. NID has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. NID is registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act and as a Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act and functions as an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of Industrial Development, Ministry of Industry. It is the only organization of its kind in the country.
Some of the regular and continuing activities of the Institute are as follows :-
Professional Education Programme
NID conducts full-time design education programmes, both at school-leavers level (four year course) and at the Advanced level (two and a half year course) for graduates in the design disciplines including products, furniture, ceramics, textile, apparel, graphic, exhibition, design and video & film animation. At present, NID has 285 students on its rolls. Design Education programmes as well as other activities of the Institute are supported by various studios and laboratories such as wood, metal, ceramics, textiles, printing, photography, audio-visual, ergonomics, design-science lab, computer-aided design studio, etc.
Outreach Programmes
Outreach Programmes make the Institutes resources available to those outside its regular educational programmes. They use three broad channels both at NID as well as at the Design Cells established at New Delhi and Bangalore, viz.:
Awareness programmes
Long-term and short-term training workshops; and
Collaborations.
Design Service and Research
Through its Client Service Unit, NID provides design services to industry and public sector undertakings. Design service assignments provide opportunities within the Institute to train the students and to develop faculty through exposure to practical realities.
Some of the client service projects completed/in progress are :-
Redesign of System Maintenance Simulator (ASMS): Aeronautical Development Authority, Bangalore.
Design of a New Visual Identity: Usha Shriram (India), New Delhi. Based on the clients suggestion, the designer is required to develop an entirely new concept reflecting Futurisatic, Modernity & for the home.
Design of Packaging: Remond Limited, Thane.
Design of Tools & Accessories for Track Maintenance: Indian Railways Centre for Advanced Maintenance Technology, Gwalior. Construction of the prptotypes for all the five track tools is in its final stages of completion. These will go in for field testing prior to the presentation at Gwalior.
Design Development of Leather Products: Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), Chennai.
Design of Visual Identity: Bhartiya Reserve Bank Note Murdan Ltd. Bangalore.
Design of Signage System, Tourist Map & Bus Stop: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanans, Tirupati. Production of ceramic tile for the Signage System.
Research Study for DLW Shop-floor, Disel Locomotive Works, Varanasi.
Design of Signage System and Guide Map for a Walking Tour of Old Goa : Goa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. Panaji.
Design of Visual Identity for Coir Geo Textiles: Coir Board, Kochi.
Design of Channel Identities: Doordarshan, New Delhi. Work on the logo design and signature file for DD National Channel.
Renovation of Ground Floor at Udyog Bhawan, Ministry of Industry, New Delhi.
